Dr. Doris Wang is a neurosurgeon who specializes in surgery for patients with movement disorders, such as essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and dystonia, a condition in which involuntarily contracting muscles cause abnormal movements. Wang uses deep brain stimulation devices – implantable devices that can send electric signals to specific areas of the brain – in her research to better understand the dynamics of neural networks that develop as humans learn motor skills. Her goal is to develop targeted treatments that restore motor skill learning in patients with brain diseases and injuries. Wang earned her doctorate in neuroscience and her medical degree at UCSF, where she also completed a residency in neurosurgery. During her residency, she developed an interest in functional neurosurgery, which utilizes a variety of techniques to restore or improve brain function. Also at UCSF, she completed a fellowship in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, which involves using advanced imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to guide neurosurgical procedures. A member of the UCSF community since 2004, Wang shares the institution's values and commitment to advancing patient care while deepening scientific understanding of neurological disorders. Dr. Luis E. Savastano is a vascular and endovascular neurosurgeon who cares for patients with conditions involving arteries or veins of the brain, neck or spine. He has experience in both minimally invasive microsurgery and endovascular techniques, and the conditions he treats include brain aneurysms, Moyamoya disease (a rare disorder that causes major blood vessels leading to a child's brain to narrow), arteriovenous malformations (abnormal tangles of arteries and veins in the brain that can rupture) and carotid artery disease. In his research, Savastano develops minimally invasive technologies and techniques to better diagnose and treat cerebrovascular diseases (those affecting blood flow to the brain). He has pioneered several endovascular devices and techniques to improve outcomes for patients with these conditions. Savastano earned his medical degree at National University of Cuyo in Argentina, where he also earned a master’s degree in anatomy and a doctorate in medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in neurointerventional radiology at the University of Michigan. Before joining the UCSF faculty, he was an assistant professor of neurosurgery and radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Ethan Winkler is a neurosurgeon who cares for both adult and pediatric patients. He treats conditions involving the brain, neck or spine, including brain aneurysms (weak, bulging spots on brain arteries), arteriovenous malformations and arteriovenous fistulas (irregular connections between arteries and veins), cavernous malformations (abnormal clusters of small blood vessels that may leak), moyamoya disease (in which progressively narrowing carotid arteries limit blood flow to the brain), stroke and carotid artery disease (in which fatty deposits narrow the vessels bringing blood to the brain). He performs both open microsurgery (techniques using high magnification and very fine instruments) and minimally invasive procedures. In research, Winkler focuses on understanding the mechanisms that result in stroke, such as blood vessel malformations and aneurysms. He directs the UCSF Vascular Anomalies & Stroke Computation Laboratory, which brings together genetic, stem cell and bioengineering technologies to understand how these conditions occur and to design better therapies. To improve patient care, he also seeks to develop safer ways to operate on the brain's blood vessels. Winkler earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neurobiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. He completed a residency in neurological surgery at UCSF, followed by a fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery and a fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery at Barrow Neurological Institute. "Dr. Daniel Raper is a neurosurgeon who specializes in procedures to repair the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord. He often cares for patients who are at risk for brain bleed and other types of stroke, including those who have no symptoms. His training allows him to perform traditional (""""open"""") surgeries as well as minimally invasive procedures. Raper's expertise encompasses care for many conditions involving the brain's blood vessels, including aneurysms (bulging vessels that can rupture), arteriovenous malformations and fistulas (abnormally connected or tangled blood vessels), carotid artery disease (narrowing of the vessels bringing oxygen-rich blood to the brain), intracranial vascular disease (clogged blood vessels in the skull or skull base), and ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (those caused, respectively, by a blocked artery that supplies the brain and by a ruptured artery bleeding into the brain). Raper's research focuses on developing safer ways to operate on the brain's blood vessels by combining minimally invasive techniques with traditional approaches. He also participates in clinical trials to evaluate new surgical technologies. He incorporates applications of virtual reality and artificial intelligence into both his teaching and research. Raper earned his medical degree from the University of Sydney School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in neuroendovascular surgery at the University of Virginia. What is the definition of Chronic Subdural Hematoma?

A chronic subdural hematoma is an "old" collection of blood and blood breakdown products between the surface of the brain and its outermost covering (the dura). The chronic phase of a subdural hematoma begins several weeks after the first bleeding.

When should I see a Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor near San Francisco, CA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor near San Francisco, CA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctors near San Francisco, CA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctors near San Francisco, CA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor near San Francisco, CA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor near San Francisco, CA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctors near San Francisco, CA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Chronic Subdural Hematoma doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
